You can make the decision to add advisory to what you already do for your clients at any time. The regulations around financial planning or advice related to financial products/services do not apply to advisory services. Exemptions are provided for most activities relating to setting up, operating, administering and selling a business, including advice on how to manage business risks. No additional formal qualifications or technical skills are required for you to begin offering either business coaching/consulting or advisory services. However, the skills required to excel in advisory services are soft skills — you will be learning how to command leverage and influence with your clients.
Advisory services are a natural part (and extension of) what you already do to ensure that the information that goes into the cloud accounting package of your client is complete and accurate. You already have a deep understanding of how your client operates, and in many cases, HOW they could do that more productively, effectively, and successfully. Advisory is merely the final component that allows you to monetise all of that knowledge by providing holistic advice and insights that influence your client to take action.
The risk of litigation for compliance work and advisory services is quite different. With compliance, clients usually approach you and you are in control of, and responsible for, getting the job done correctly and on time. In many ways, advisory is already a natural part of, or extension of, what you do (or could be doing) with your clients to help them succeed. With advisory, your role is to deliver insights so that your client can ask better questions, make better decisions and step up as a leader. Ideally, you will collaborate with them and influence/empower them to make decisions and take action. It is not your role to “do the work”, the onus is clearly on your client to make decisions and take action. Therefore, you cannot guarantee that any action taken by them will have a positive impact. It is impossible to predict the future or anticipate all factors that will impact on results. It is however prudent to inform your insurer that you will be providing advisory services and/or that your income has materially increased as a result of adding an additional revenue stream
Please allow one to two hours each month to attend and prepare for the webinars and videos. You will also want to set aside another two to four hours for reading and follow up homework or exercises. You are also welcome to participate in the Facebook group each day if you have questions, want feedback, or accountability/support. You will also be invited to answer quizzes to test your knowledge. The quizzes for each module must be completed and graded by an instructor before you can move on to the next module. Each module is designed to help you go out into your practice and use the skills you have learned immediately with your clients in a work capacity.
